Tokens of Affection: The Letters of a Planter's Daughter in the Old South (Southern Voices from the Past: Women's Letters, Diaries, and Writings)
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (March, 1996)
Authors: Maria Bryan Harford Connell and Carol K. Bleser
Average review score:

A highly readable and entertaining antebellum diary.
Those who are disappointed by the dregs of antebellum women's diaries predominating in publishing today will find plenty to make them happy here. This book is chatty, gossipy, quite frank and revealing, yet informative; in all, a true window into the lives of two sisters. I recommend it highly as a read, however; as a $45 purchase...go see if the library has it first. -Marianna

Korolev : How One Man Masterminded the Soviet Drive to Beat America to the Moon
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (25 March, 1997)
Author: James Harford
Average review score:

An account on the man behind soviet space program
I discovered this book accidentally. Before reading this book the only soviet space personalities that I knew were Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova. I guess I am not alone on this. Reading this book gives me an understanding that Russian space program went back much earlier than that of American. A lot of useful information about Russian space science and program, and its aspiration can be gained from this single book. This book talks a lot about Korolev, it also give good exposition on Soviet space program. One may wonder why Korolev has never been a household name like Gagarin, and how come the American is the first one landed on the moon.

Highly recommendable biography of a Soviet enigma
Those of us who remember the Cold War easily recall the freightening threat implied in the Soviet space triumphs. We were amazed that a culture that, supposedly technologically inferior to the West, could excel where we lagged behind. In the West, we had Dr von Braun as our hero but the Soviets' was a faceless enigma identified only as the "Chief Designer." Kept under tight security almost until his death, Sergei Korolev, the Chief Designer, was a genius every bit as brilliant and driven as von Braun. Here is the first biography dedicated to this important figure in the history of space flight and one that is possible only after the fall of the Soviet Union opened secret archives. James Harford's book is written in a flowing, graceful style that many novelists would envy and puts many a dry biographer to shame. KOROLEV is a highly readable - and enjoyable - look at a hitherto unknown slice of histroy that can be recommended to anyone interested in technology, space history, or just a fascinating read.

Excellent, informative profile of the Soviet "VonBraun."
For any student of the Soviet/Russian space program, "Korolev" fills in the missing gaps in our understanding of the genesis of their thrust into space. The book is informative yet clear in the realization that the heavy bureaucracy, lack of money and technological advances and the "dual" moon programs pre-empted the Russians to effectively compete with the United States in the race to the moon. The author also gives us a keen insight into the cruelty of Josef Stalin and the persecution of the leading Soviet scientists.

An informative & reassuring guide to pre & post op procedure
I saw this book in Woman's Journal in Britain and bought it immediately. I was contemplating surgery but felt nervous about complications. It was an easy read and informative and gave me the confidence to go ahead with a nose job. I'm now contemplating another operation and will use the advice that Susie gives with regards to preparing for the operation and taking care of myself afterwards. The most interesting thing about this book as that the author had photographs taking during HER operation, so that you get a feel for what you are in for.

The Zulu War journal of Colonel Henry Harford, C.B

Wonderful first person account of Anglo-Zulu War
This is a first person account of the Anglo-Zulu War written by a young man who grew up in Natal and went to England for military training. He participated at least peripherally in several of the major battles of the war and gives great insight to many of the key players. While not a lengthy book, it includes wonderful details of the conflict and the country.

GIMP Essential Reference (OTHER NEW RIDERS)
Published in Textbook Binding by Que (19 November, 1999)
Author: Alex Harford
Average review score:

could be much better
New Riders publish a first class book on the Gimp {Grokking the GIMP); win some, lose some - this is another book. Whereas Grokking the Gimp concentrates on a few features and explains both in depth and with insight the Essential Reference aims to cover the entire application. That's fine, a useful complement, but it is not good enough merely to list all the options. A desk-top companion such as this needs to provide some background; tell me what is not obvious from trial and error clicking. Thus it is not very helpful on page 76 to tell me that there are compression and optimisation options for JPEG files, it would be helpful indicate under that heading (and not later on page 80) that >30-85% is the usable range. There is no explanation at all of what optimize does, and should a book about an open source application be so uncommitted to PNG? Three pages are wasted on a list of SANE scanners that even the author admits will be useless by the time the book is published. There are occasional insights in this book, but the overall impression is that it was written from the perspective of a Gimp hacker rather than a graphics program _user_. There is a need for a book like this but either New Riders need to produce a much improved second edition or some other publisher (O'Reilly?) will.

Finally, a rea manual
I'm the kind of guy who likes to have a physical manual to wrap my mits around when looking for an answer. This is that book for the GIMP. It's all in here, and then some. Not *all* the features work, but the new release will be out soon, I hope, and then it'll be *erally* worth having. In the mean time, I have most of the answers I need in this volume.

RE: version of the GIMP
1.1.16 is the version that will become 1.2 when it is considered stable.

Just download and compile...
